Secondly, why are you going with swordsage over warblade? You're giving up intelligence synergy and a better chasis for your character. Why is it you're wanting to do a kensai? This is costing you significant amounts of casting, so there should be a good reason. I guess that is also true of classes like the Monk (aside from the aforementioned Monk/Cleric, Monk with certain full-BAB classes can be quite nice too) but you can really open up some unusual things with PrCs.Before giving advice I'd like to ask a few questions to figure out what you're wanting to do with this character and your thought process behind your plans so far. A lot of PrCs which would otherwise be quite bad suddenly become a lot more playable in gestalt. The most interesting combos, I think, involve PrCs, though. At higher levels, you could perhaps use the Soulborn's Smiting stuff (Sapphire Smite, Soulsmite Gauntlets) with the Crusader's Smite ability, fuelled off Incarnate essentia. Crusader works thematically, too Paladin or Soulborn doesn't work because of alignment restrictions. but now you have full BAB too!) and the Evil Incarnate can add a slab of damage onto what are already decent Warblade (or whatever) attacks. The Lawful Incarnate can get crazy ABs (the AB bonuses don't quite make up for low BAB. Incarnate with any full-BAB class (probably Warblade or maybe Crusader, though there are many options) also works very well, especially if you're a Lawful or Evil Incarnate. Swashbuckler/Wizard works well as well, of course (something like Swash-Wiz 3, then Warb-Wiz after that, or at a suitable breakpoint to get the manoeuvres you want).īinder works well thematically and in fact mechanically with Warlock (Cha synergy) and Incarnate (Con synergy, and a great ability to retool every day). Warblade/Wizard is also a natural choice for a gish with Int synergy. A more unusual one would be Psychic Warrior/Druid which would actually be very thematic if you squint at PsyWar for a sec.įactotum/Wizard (or /Archivis, Beguiler or Psion) can be pretty ridiculous once you reach L8, when you get both free actions (from Factotum) and powerful things to spend them on (from Wizard). Likewise, Archivist, Beguiler, Wizard/Wu Jen and Psion (EDIT: Or Artificer, to an extent) can be combined to great effect. You could throw in Favoured Soul, but you're potentially adding a Wis requirement. Thus, two of Sorcerer, Dread Necro, Warblade, Bard, Warlock or Wilder works nicely. In fairness, it does highlight some of the drawbacks of some of them, but non-Core options are often better (not surprising I guess).Īny dual-caster is potentially quite powerful, and matching up the casting stats is the obvious thing to do. Swashbuckler/Warblade: Whenever I want to play a melee-type pirate or swashbuckler, this is the combo I like to use.Īlas, the examples given in UA are.Not the ridiculous sword-channeling prestige classes that cropped up once WotC took over the game, but the real evocation-based fighter/mages based on the 2nd Edition kit. Warblade/Swordsage: If your GM can work with you to make the Arcane Swordsage a viable option, I love this combo whenever i want to play a true elven bladesinger.I tend to play them as medieval-style monks the cool cloistered type, not the goofy Kung Fu television series-inspired ones. Archivist/Factotum: A super skill monkey who really, really takes advantage of Knowledge Devotion and Intelligence in general.Factotum/Rogue: I use this combination whenever I want to play an Athasian Bard-inspired character. Still, with the Beguiler's vastly improved spell-list and spellcasting abilities, and the Bard's natural charm, they go a long way towards being a great party face. For some reason, the Beguiler - who's very name suggests that it should be a Charisma-based class - is Intelligence-based instead. Bard/Beguiler: This is more of a thematic mesh than an optimal one.In fact, I'm a huge proponent of this being a baseline class rather than a gestalt, they mesh that well. Binder/Warlock: Never has there been a more natural gestalt combination.
